Hautbois House

This blog will be regularly updated whilst we are away on our residential in Hautbois.

We have some very excited children and we are now counting down the days until we go. Just a few reminders before we go.

All cases to be left under the bicycle shed on the morning we leave.

All medicines/inhalers/etc. (WHICH MUST BE CLEARLY LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME AND THE DOSAGE REQUIRED) should be handed to Mr. Codman;
The children will need a packed lunch and a drink (not fizzy please) for the first day;
Children are NOT allowed to bring mobile phones or personal stereos/ipods/other electrical equipment.

Hopefully the weather will stay nice and warm for us so we suggest that your child brings a named bottle of sun cream.

We have arrived safely and have enjoyed our first activity, we have either been climbing, archery or the nightlife activity. I am really proud of the climbers several made it to the top despite their fears and worries.

It is lunchtime now and we are all very hungry. After lunch we are either doing archery, the obstacle course or archery.  I will upload photos this evening.

What a fab afternoon, it was amazing watching the children conquer lots of fears by abseiling.

The highlight of the day has been making the beds!!

The children's bellies are full, we have eaten loads and they have had a good run around to burn off their energy. All children are now in bed, not asleep yet!!

Had a good night, most children were asleep by 10, sounds like several are awake now (6:30).

Busy day today doing water activities, hope the weather is good.

We have had a lovely day out on the water, the children have kayaked, canoed and built rafts. Some got wetter than others but all had a fantastic time. It was really lovely to see Mrs Long, who came to visit this afternoon.

We are off outside shortly to have toasted marshmallows around the campfire.

I will upload some more photos once the children are in bed, which I don’t think will be too late as they are tired.

Had a brilliant nights sleep, most seem to be asleep by 9:30 and have not long woken up. Another busy morning as we are either crate stacking, abseiling or on the climbing wall.

The children have had a fantastic time and have been excellently behaved. I know they are really looking forward to seeing you all. We will be back by 3pm when the children can go straight home.

Thank you. See you all later.

Design and Technology

Wow, what an end to the half term. We have had an exciting day making our cams moving toys. We have been painting, using hacksaws, sketching animals and designing toys which look attractive and appealing to the eye. I think you will all agree that the children have made an excellent job.

Hope you all have a wonderful break and a Happy Easter.

Wednesday 3 April 2019

It has been a busy half term and we are working hard this week to get all of our topics finished before we break for Easter.

On Monday we had our science day where we were learning more about forces.

We began by studying air resistance, we made parachutes to see what factors would affect air resistance. We began by making a square parachute out of a black bag and seeing how long it took to land when dropped from a height. We then tried different variables to see if it changed the air resistance. One group changed the size of the canopy, one changed the size of the string, another changed the material used and the final group changed the shape of the canopy. Our findings showed that all of these things affected air resistance.

Our next activity was to test air resistance, we did this by making shapes out of modelling clay and testing how long they took to drop in a cylinder of water.

Next we looked at pulleys, the children were tasked with making pulleys out of straws then they attached a bag with an object in and tried to lift it from the floor to the desk. The children showed great perseverance because their designs did not work first time but they reinforced parts of their models and everyone got theirs to work.

Our final assignment was to makes gears that interlocked and when you turned one the other cog turned. We found this tricky but again, perseverance and great teamwork saw some groups complete the task.

We are going to end the week with a design and technology day, making our moving toys. I know many of the children are excited about this.  I will upload photos on Friday.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and look forward to seeing all the children back for our last term in Polar Bear class.
