It has been a busy half term and we are working hard this week to get all of our topics finished before we break for Easter.

On Monday we had our science day where we were learning more about forces.

We began by studying air resistance, we made parachutes to see what factors would affect air resistance. We began by making a square parachute out of a black bag and seeing how long it took to land when dropped from a height. We then tried different variables to see if it changed the air resistance. One group changed the size of the canopy, one changed the size of the string, another changed the material used and the final group changed the shape of the canopy. Our findings showed that all of these things affected air resistance.

Our next activity was to test air resistance, we did this by making shapes out of modelling clay and testing how long they took to drop in a cylinder of water.

Next we looked at pulleys, the children were tasked with making pulleys out of straws then they attached a bag with an object in and tried to lift it from the floor to the desk. The children showed great perseverance because their designs did not work first time but they reinforced parts of their models and everyone got theirs to work.

Our final assignment was to makes gears that interlocked and when you turned one the other cog turned. We found this tricky but again, perseverance and great teamwork saw some groups complete the task.

We are going to end the week with a design and technology day, making our moving toys. I know many of the children are excited about this.  I will upload photos on Friday.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter break and look forward to seeing all the children back for our last term in Polar Bear class.
