Inspirational Maths Week
Polar Bears have had a busy start to the term, starting topics on Earth and Space and the Maya.
This week has been Inspirational Maths week, the children have enjoyed working together looking at different maths problems.
Monday - Finger Trails
The children started by rolling a dice and moving along a trial, they then worked out sequences to complete trails and the quickest and shortest trails to reach home.
Tuesday - Hide the Pixls
The aim was to hide the pixl pictures in the least and the most rectangles than they could.
Wednesday - Crossing a rectangle
Using a 5 x 8 and a 8 x 5 grid the children had to find the longest route across the rectangle. They then investigated different size rectangles, looking for patterns.
Thursday - Penny collections
When pennies are put in groups of 2 there is one penny left over. When in groups of 3, 5 or 6 there is one penny left over. When in groups of 7 there are no pennies left over. The children investigated how many pennies were needed to fit this criteria.
Friday - Checkerboards and more
To begin children explored patterns in a 100 square. I think we all learnt many things we can not noticed before. The children then had a checkerboard with squares shaded and worked out a pattern for the shaded squares.
We all had a good week thinking about maths in a different way.

Science Day
Polars Bears have had a very exciting/busy science day. The children have been investigating the properties of different materials.
First we looked at different solids to see if they dissolve.
First we looked at different solids to see if they dissolve.
Our next experiment was to separate different materials. We used filtration, magnetic attraction, sieving and evaporation.
This week we have also looked at how good an insulator different materials are. We wanted to see which material would be the best to keep our lunch cool.
More experiments to finish off our unit tomorrow.
I hope the children had an enjoyable day.

Hautbois
All information relating to Hautbois will be added to this blog.
We will keep it up to date during our time away, with photos and regular updates.
Wednesday
We have arrived safely and been to our rooms. Beds are sort of made, some better than others!!
We are just completing the obstacle course and nightline, then off for lunch.
Had rather a wet afternoon but we have completed the archery and abseiling. Children were amazing at abseiling, we had lots of nerves but many overcame these to climb down the wall.
Dinner was good, we had gammon, potatoes and beans followed by chocolate brownie. We are now in the lounge playing games.
10:30 pm most are asleep now so hopefully a good nights sleep for all. 😀
Pictures will follow as having problems uploading from the iPad.
Thursday
Good morning. Children are all up, some quite early! Everyone slept well.
The sun is shining so we are hoping for a good day.
Breakfast is at 8am then we are off either on the low ropes or canoeing.
After lunch we will be kayaking or raft building.
Wow what a day, there has been some fantastic teamwork on the low ropes. I could not be prouder of how some of the children have supported each other.
Canoeing and kayaking were amazing, water was cold but we have had so much fun.
Children are all (well I hope all) showering and getting ready for dinner. We are then off to toast marshmallows by the campfire. Highlight of the evening will be the children teaching the adults to floss, this could be embarrassing, I hope the are patient with us. 😀
Had some very tired children last night, most were asleep by 9:30 and all is still quiet at 6:30am.
Friday
Busy morning today, we will be sorting out bedding and packing first thing. After breakfast the children will either be crate staking or going up the climbing wall.
We are aiming to be back by 3pm, should we be late a message will be sent.
I know that they are all really looking forward to seeing you.
We are home.😊
I would like to say a really big thank you to all of the children, they have been amazing and made it such a fantastic experience. We have loved every minute of it and couldn't be prouder, watching what they have achieved the last few days.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

April 2017
Welcome back to the Summer term.
We have had a busy start to the term, with two visitors this week.
Cycling
Tuesday was the children's last cycling lesson, they were recapping over the things that they have learnt over the last few weeks. Tuesday will be there test - good luck to them all.
Moneysense
Yesterday we took part in a MoneySense workshop which is sponsored by Natwest bank. Our theme for the afternoon was to organise a party for a child. However there was one drawback we only had a budget of £100. The children began by thinking about what makes a good party, they then looked at character profiles of 4 children and decided which child they would like to organise a party for. In groups they then decided what type of party they would have and thought about all the things they would need. They were then told there was a budget of £100, some groups had to rethink their plans. It was good to see them working out how they could cut back, what they could get for free and the realisation of how much things cost. Finally they had to present the details of their party and we voted which party we would like to go to.
The children had a fun afternoon, it was great to see the teamwork during the activities.

Norfolk Welcome
Today we had a visit from the Norfolk Records Office, they taught us about the refugees that have come to Norfolk over the last 500 years. We looked at censuses, and a timeline of events around the world which led to the refugees fleeing their countries. On the last activity we were given a box of items and had to decide which were the 7 most important things to take in our suitcases as we left our homes, there was some great thinking about the items and the reasons why they chose these things.. Again some great teamwork.

Hautbois House is fast approaching, I am making the final plans. I did visit in the half term and was really impressed by the facilities and the staff.
I am going to set up a blog called Hautbois, this is where I will keep you up to date with what we are doing. I will keep you informed throughout the day of what we are up to and will upload photos to show what we are doing. If there are any questions or concerns about the trip please can and speak to me and I will do my best to answer them or find the answer for you.
